Shed 5
As one of the oldest remaining wharf stores in Lambton Harbour, it is hard to imagine Shed 5 could house one of Wellington’s best known and most popular restaurants.
It took some serious redevelopment to bring this historic building on Wellington’s central city waterfront to its current state.
Following feasibility studies and negotiations with the harbour authorities, our first step was to completely gut the building. We then sandblasted and polyurethaned the exposed roof framing and trusses and the old timber flooring, which the client wanted to retain.
Then began the fitout, including installation of full restaurant facilities, a conservatory, a bar, toilets and an area for a fresh fish market.
As part of our project management services, we procured and managed a number of separate sub trades. All the contractors were working in the big open space, often at the same time. The construction sector was very busy, and we were working to a tight deadline. To ensure we had contractors available when we were ready for them, we kept them on call, at times bringing them to the site and making them wait until we needed them. The tactic worked, the restaurant opened on time, and today it is still one of the top seafood restaurants in Wellington.
