Les Mills Auckland
The revived and refreshed flagship gym combines passion with personality, and is integral to building and enhancing the Les Mills brand.
Les Mills is known as one of the most forward-thinking fitness brands on the planet. So when it came to refurbishing their Auckland City branch while still operational, they thought ahead, and called in The Building Intelligence Group.
But this project deadline carried an added impetus. The Les Mills Global Summit – with its 650 guests – was due to happen in February 2008. Not to mention maintaining service for the club’s 12,000 paying members: a top priority for Les Mills.
Headed by Project Manager Blair Wolfgram, The Building Intelligence Group team pulled out all the stops to transform the building as seamlessly and quickly as possible. This meant rising to the challenges of working in a functioning, busy gym, a compressed design and construction period, and a tight, value led budget.
The first priority was sourcing long lead materials, as these determined when key elements of the design could be built. From this the team designated sections that could be completed prior to Christmas.
“We understood that the biggest stakeholders in the project were ultimately the gym members,” Blair says. This required planning ahead and a high degree of flexibility from his team, who at one point created temporary RPM and cardio zones in the car park.
Collaboration with Les Mills, architect John Wray and head contractor Cape Interiors, ensured issues were resolved and members’ enjoyment remained paramount. And as the day of the Summit dawned, the new space was ready – welcoming its delegates with a deserved sense of pride.
