The Ascott Metropolis

It is probably the most iconic building developed in recent times. It has been said that it represents Auckland better than the Sky Tower; a classical and elegant New York style 42-storey apartment tower.

But when the client first engaged us the Metropolis was nothing more than a piece of inspired vision and an unconditional contract on a Central Auckland site.

The client was very specific. He wanted to create a building that would become an icon; that would have a timeless classicism to its design. He wanted, in short, a piece of New York. So the first thing we did was go with him to New York to find a concept architect.

The project involved lateral thinking all round. The design concept came from New York. The construction company came from Australia. Local contractors were more than capable of the job but weren’t, at that time available. Bringing in a new contractor looking to break into the New Zealand market meant that we were able to reduce the cost.

We effected similar savings by doing the work as a two-stage contract. All demolition and in-ground work was done as separate contracts to facilitate an earlier construction start and avoid the huge premium that maybe put on for risk by a main contractor.

The Metropolis started construction in late 1997 and was successfully completed in September 1999 in time for the Millennium celebrations. It has 360 apartments, retail facilities, and a hotel that attracted a major international operator. And it has, as the client always envisaged, the presence that has made it a landmark.
