Social Housing Solutions Jun 23, 2010

The Building Intelligence Group has been appointed as Construction Project Manager for the housing upgrade of Wellington City Council's Hanson Court site.

This Newtown based project is a crucial part of the major initiative the Council is undertaking to substantially improve social housing in the capital. It is part of a 20-year programme of work to improve 40 housing complexes, housing 4000 tenants, across Wellington. The programme will cost $460 million and is funded by the Government and Wellington City Council.

The Hanson Court project will bring these 40 - 50 year old multiple dwelling blocks up to 21st century standards. Improvements will encompass ventilation, heating and insulation, along with major upgrades to bathrooms and kitchen facilities. Changes to the landscaping and the addition of a large community space will also create a 'heart' for the site.

The programme is running in five distinct stages which are centred on ensuring accommodation solutions are created for all current tenants.  The Tower, the first block to be refurbished, is currently under construction and is due to be completed in the last quarter of 2010, with all blocks completed by late 2011.

Timelines are always critical, but even more so when the lives of so many individuals and families are affected. Our team is relishing keeping all parts of the programme completely on track and delivering this part of the Council's vision of improved living conditions in safer and better quality homes.
