Supreme Court takes shape May 29, 2009

The new Supreme Court building will be a significant addition to Wellington and New Zealand's public buildings and will be a heritage site for the future.

Site clearance commenced in June 2007, with the main construction commencing in October that year. Construction is expected to be completed by late 2009, with the court having its first sitting in early 2010.

The Building Intelligence Group has been working on the restoration of the former Old High Court Building and creation of the adjacent new Supreme Court building since 2002.

"It has been a privilege to work on this project for so long, and we've enjoyed the challenge of pulling together two uniquely separate building projects," says The Building Intelligence Group project director Ian Macaskill.

"Not only is the Supreme Court going to be iconic, but it is probably the most important public building being constructed in New Zealand at present, while the Old High Court Building will be one of our most significant heritage sites.  It's exciting to see both nearing completion at the same time and to see the vision taking shape."
