Z - THINK the Building Intelligence Group

Starting with Z

Right now there’s a compelling story being told about the distinctly kiwi fuel brand z energy that’s all about new zealand. Actually the z story started with a survey – the biggest of its kind in a decade.

17,000 kiwis took part in consumer research to find out what kiwi motorists really wanted. The insights gained radically shaped the thinking of the New Zealand owners who had purchased one of the world’s biggest fuel brands, Shell New Zealand, and heightened the desire to introduce an entirely kiwi story in the NZ fuel market.

As the Z story builds through re-energised forecourts, great food, fresh new environments, and a return to real kiwi service, there’s also a change happening at Z’s own head office at Wellington’s Queens Wharf. With the rebrand came the need to refit Z’s national office to create a work environment that enables greater collaboration and efficiency.

Gail Calder, Asset Manager for Z said “Our working environment did not reflect our new company and culture and did not support our aspiration of becoming a world-class kiwi company. We wanted a work environment that enables behaviours consistent with Z’s values – be straight up, have the passion, share everything, back our people and be bold. We looked for project managers that ‘got’ that, and The Building Intelligence Group stepped up and demonstrated to us that they did.”

The Building Intelligence Group was appointed as Project Managers, initially providing a technical and methodical review of the agreement to lease, high level programmes and fit out contractor procurement. We then managed the design phase and hard and soft fit outs. “TBIG have been proactively ensuring that all milestones to date have been achieved. Z’s fit out programme has little room for slippage so their primary role is to keep this project on schedule whilst mitigating any issues without any impact on practical completion.” says Gail Calder.

The single level HQ will accommodate 200 staff within its 2,800m2 – providing a truly open plan space to support staff working together dynamically. Architects Jasmax’s interpretation of Z’s brief was creative and on the mark. Space planning was critical and plenty of open, informal collaboration zones combine well with a new entrance way and reception hub.

Z chose to vacate the premises during fit out, temporarily shifting to the Willeston Centre – so the team can return to the big reveal just before Christmas. The Building Intelligence Group is taking care of not only the new Queens Wharf fit out, but also Z’s temporary accommodation and relocation.

The Building Intelligence Group’s Project Director Andrew Cooper believes this is where we add real value to clients like Z. “Our role as Project Manager is about making the whole process totally stress free, seamless and well managed. The opportunity to partner with Dow Group as Z’s appointed Independent Property Advisors has equally steered the project to success.” The project is currently on track for occupation in December.
