The Australian Centre for Science, Innovation and Society is concerned with the interaction between technological, social and economic innovations - particularly those that create more sustainable human environments. Initially, research has examined innovative uses for biotechnology, nano-scale technology and communication technology.
The centre's associated Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab recently engaged with a range of experts, asking them to provide concepts for developing the remaining vacant land still available in Melbourne's CBD. The precinct known as E-Gate was the recipient of some rather radical thinking - to create a zero-carbon eco-city of the future. In the present, the Lab's Sustainable Landscapes project hub retrofits existing Melbourne suburbs for sustainability and adaptability.
